For 2 minutes and 46 seconds, you can relieve the memories of YLC 2009. Someone took all of the footage that was shot at YLC (probably 30 GB worth), sifted through all of it, cut out the exciting bits, and set it to music. And who was this special little someone that did all of this for us? Nick Fung – our mentor extraordinaire and Cafe Y 2009 MC. Enjoy!

Students are blindfolded and must use non-verbal communication to get their tasks accomplished.

Rice University at night.

We are the Mentors, the leader maker!

Here's a poem that one of our board members wrote:
Every year in June YLC comes around.
It instantly becomes the talk of the town.
This year’s conference is themed A Call to Action.
Everyone will be separated into factions.
Each team will have their own nonprofit issue.
It is your goal to stand out and push through.
Get to know your team through some fun and cool games,
A good way to make sure everyone knows your name.
Be creative making your warm fuzzy bag.
Stand out from the crowd designing your team flag.
Line Up! will have you at a loss for words.
There is no doubt that you will look absurd.
Physical activities are the best part of the day.
Everyone gets a chance to run around and play.
Café Y showcases the talented few.
Feel free to go up to sing a song or two.
Sunday comes around and we must say bye.
Everyone is still on a YLC high!
Apply these skills to start your own NPO.
Work hard at it and watch your group grow.
Be prepared this year for a wonderful time.
Hope to see all of y’all at YLC 2009!

Tim Hsu has been with YLC as a student, mentor, and a board member altogether for many years. We asked him to tell us what he likes about YLC and what YLC means to him.
Being a part of YLC for the past four years, my involvement has varied from a volunteer to actually being on the board. But what always draws me back to the organization is having the chance to be a mentor. Having the chance to inspire and motivate a student to become a leader is invaluable. I believe we have been successful because we are able to present these leadership skills to the students in a fun and exiting way. We give them a nurturing environment where these skills can develop and grow. And by surrounding them with their own peers, we give them the experience of working and interacting in a team setting. I am glad I’m a part of YLC and hope it will continue to grow and develop as time passes.

We asked one of our fellow mentors, Jason Tung, about his perspective on YLC and how it has impacted him.
I first attended YLC as a student back in 1998 and had the time of my life. Even though YLC was only a 1.5 day conference (it's now 2 days), it had a much bigger impact on me than other camps and conferences that I had previously attended. The theme that year was "Breaking the Mold" and we learned about tackling the stereotypes that Asian-Americans often face in society. My mentors were inspiring, the learning sessions were eye-opening, and the team activities were exciting. Not only did I learn a lot about myself and Asian-Americans, I had a ton of fun and made lasting friendships despite the short time period. Because I had such a great experience, I immediately volunteered to be a mentor when I was a college freshman. Since then, I have mentored four more times and served as a board member three times. Many of my past students are now mentors and board members. This year's conference is YLC's 20th Anniversary and I'm so excited for the program that we have planned for the students. We are really going to challenge the students to step up and make an impact in their communities. I would encourage all students to attend YLC and I would further encourage them to serve as a mentor, because that truly has been the most rewarding experience for me.
