Call to Action Scholarship

Throughout the conference, you were encouraged to explore the concerns that affect your community and where you can play a role.  You worked on building communication, networking, prioritizing, time management, goal setting, and team building skills that are necessary to being a leader.

Now, we’re asking you to respond to a call to action – a call for you to plan, organize, and execute your own community service project. This pledge requires you to use the leadership skills learned from conference and apply this knowledge to effect real, positive change.

What’s in it for you?

In addition to working on leadership skills learned at conference and serving the community, the students who submit the top 3 projects to YLC will receive this year’s scholarship award – a brand new laptop!

Project Requirements

  1. Your project should address a cause that is important to you and your community needs.
  2. The project must clearly benefit other people, our fellow creatures, or the planet we share.
  3. The service activity cannot have been done primarily to complete a work or school assignment.
  4. Scholarship recipients must have attended YLC Conference 2009 and be present at YLC’s annual banquet to receive the award.  This year’s banquet will be held on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Kim Son Restaurant.
  5. Online application form and essay (topics below) must be submitted by December 31, 2009.

How do I apply?

Submit an online application and e-mail your answer to 1 of the 2 essay choices below to scholarship@ylc.net:

  1. 500 words minimum: What purpose does your project serve and what prompted you to choose it?  (In other words, what was the need in your community for your project and how did you come up with the idea?)
  2. 500 words minimum: How did you utilize the skills learned/practiced at YLC throughout the planning and execution of your project?  (Refer to your student program booklets to review the different skills taught at conference).

Questions regarding scholarship entries should be sent to scholarship@ylc.net.
