The theme for YLC Conference 2009 is Call to Action. At this year's conference, we will present the students with a"call to action" - a call for our students to plan, organize, and execute their own community service project.

YLC is seeking friendly, enthusiastic, and energetic college upperclassmen and young professionals who have a desire to make a positive impact on the next generation and their community for high school students. Become a mentor or volunteer!

Happy Lunar New Year!

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

On Saturday February 13, 2010, Youth Leadership Council (YLC) volunteers made an appearance at the Chinese Community Center on Town Park Dr. For those of you who were approached by one of our enthusiastic volunteers and decided to visit our website, thanks for visiting! We hope you’ll attend our upcoming conference from June 25 to June 27, 2010.

Whether you apply as a student or a mentor, you have a number of ways to receive notification about the release of the applications.

Students must be attending high school in Fall 2010 to apply. We release the student application sometime around late March.

Mentors must have completed at least 2 years of college to apply. Recent college graduates are also encouraged to apply. Expect to see the mentor application in April.

Before we sign off, we have a new year’s gift for everyone! We created a YLC slideshow that recaps Conference 2009 and gives those of you who are new to YLC a small glance of what YLC is like. The slideshow debuted at our Banquet 2 weeks ago.

And in case you missed it, check out the YLC 2009 music video!

Our first music video

Friday, October 16th, 2009

For 2 minutes and 46 seconds, you can relieve the memories of YLC 2009. Someone took all of the footage that was shot at YLC (probably 30 GB worth), sifted through all of it, cut out the exciting bits, and set it to music. And who was this special little someone that did all of this for us? Nick Fung – our mentor extraordinaire and Cafe Y 2009 MC. Enjoy!

Welcome to YLC 2.0

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Twenty years ago, a group of concerned Asian parents knew that something was missing from their children’s education. Their qualms were not with the educational system – public or private. Their children had excelled in their studies and demonstrated academic excellence. What they realized was that academics only represented  part of the picture in determining one’s success in the real world. And so they acted. In 1989 they held the very first Youth Leadership Conference. As word spread in the Asian community of YLC’s teachings of leadership, communication, and self-discovery, interest grew. Student attendance increased with each passing summer, and a few years later, conferences were held at Rice University in order to accommodate more students. The early YLC conferences were held in just one day; today they conference is held over a weekend-long program. A formal group – the Youth Leadership Council – made up entirely of volunteers was established to oversee the planning and delivery of the YLC annual summer conference.

It is with great honor that I present you with YLC 2.0 (pronounced “two-point-oh”). The redesign of our website not only follows a recent Internet movement to improve web interfaces, but YLC 2.0 commemorates the volunteers, sponsors, students, and parents that have made YLC possible for over 20 years.

YLC alumni, we know you’re out there! It doesn’t matter how  you were involved in YLC. We want to hear from you! Reconnect with old YLC friends on our Facebook Fan Page. Send us a message on Twitter. Subscribe to our email newsletter.
