About the 2012 Conference

Youth Leadership Council is proud to announce our Conference 2012 theme – FINDING YOUR VOICE! This year’s conference will focus on communication skills and how to enhance those skills to become a more effective leader. The 2012 program will encourage students to develop their confidence and presence as they become better communicators and leaders.

Priscilla Ly (Dallas, Texas) – “Game for the Cure: Modern Warfare 3 Charity Tournament”

Priscilla created a charity gaming tournament featuring the video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, with all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The event also featured a photo booth, raffle drawings, poster signings, board games, and a buffet table. Priscilla also designed and hand-created custom t-shirts for event participants. Game for the Cure was a huge success and participants have already begun requesting a 2nd tournament!

Ray Van (South El Monte, California) – “Threads for Those in Need”

Ray worked with three youth councils and a school club (26 total participants) to organize a clothing drive for Goodwill. They made 4 different flyer designs and passed out over 5,000 flyers in five different cities: Arcadia, Temple City, Alhambra, El Monte, and Northridge. They also collected clothes at school by offering $50 American Express gift cards as incentives. In the end, they collected enough clothes to fill over half a Goodwill donation truck, floor to ceiling!

Calvin Wong (Alhambra, California) – “Pathways to Healthcare Professions Workshop”

Calvin organized a healthcare professions workshop featuring speakers talking about the healthcare industry (from orthopedic surgery to pharmacy) in a panel discussion and small group sessions led by the respective speakers. The event was co-sponsored by the Chinese American Citizens Alliance Youth Council (CACA) and its attendees included both students and parents who wished to learn more about the job of different health professionals.

Professional Title: Owner & Ice Cream Socialist

Where do you work? Wanderlust Ice Cream & Sorbet

How long have you had this profession? I bought my first freezer March 2011

1. Tell us 3 things that only a person working in the ice cream making industry would know:95%
of the ice cream you eat is made from a pre-made base that is then mixed with flavorings, as opposed
to using fresh ingredients and natural fruits/flavors. “Premium” ice cream means higher fat, not higher
quality. And vegan ice cream can be just as good as the dairy stuff!

2. What is the coolest thing about your job? I love being a part of the farmer’s market community
and supporting local small-scale farmers and fellow food entrepreneurs.

3. In 2-3 sentences, what kind of schooling/training do you need to be an ice cream maker? You
need a good understanding of the mechanics of commercial ice cream manufacturing and the science of
ice cream. There are a number of very good books and courses offered around the country. As a small
business owner, a strong grasp on marketing/branding and finance/accounting can’t hurt either.

4. What are the obstacles of someone working in your profession? Starting a business from scratch
is a daunting task in itself. It’s challenging competing with larger, well-established companies with far
fewer resources at your disposal.

5. What (personality) characteristics would you say make for a good ice cream maker? Persistence,
creativity, and a healthy constitution for processing all that sugar!

6. How did your parents react when you chose this profession? They thought it was a hilarious joke.
Look who’s laughing now.

CHALLENGE:

Innovative Community Project

WHAT? STUDENTS GET A CHANCE TO COME UP WITH AN ORIGINAL COMMUNITY PROJECT

HOW?(RULES)

• 1 or more students can be involved in conceptualizing the idea (prize split between # of students) – Anyone may be involved in the implementation
• Each student involved must spend at least 8 hours implementing the project
• Students are encouraged to ask their mentors for guidance
• The project can help in any area: Environment, youth, seniors, disabled, animals, the arts, homeless, health, safety, leadership development…almost anything you can think of. And if you aren’t sure, just email us your questions (see below).
• Please be detailed in your project outline. Please include:

-    Name of students involved

-    Email & phone # of students involved

-    Project description (1/2 page maximum) – Include specific place, date range you’d like to implement, # of people you will need, what you will do

-    Why did you decide in this area (Environment, youth, etc.) & this project? (1/2 page max.)

-    What is so innovative/creative/forward-thinking about your project? (1/2 page max.)

-    Complete packet should be no more than 2 pages

# OF WINNERS & WHAT WILL THEY WIN? 3 projects will each win $1,000 scholarships towards college

WHERE DO I SUBMIT MY PROJECT IDEA? Submit the project (in a Word document) to program@ylc.net by Tuesday, 7/26/2011 (1 month from Conference).

YLC is seeking friendly, energetic, and enthusiastic college students and young professionals to mentor high school students at this year’s YLC conference. Mentors must have completed two years of college by June 2011 or be a young professional.
