On Saturday February 13, 2010, Youth Leadership Council (YLC) volunteers made an appearance at the Chinese Community Center on Town Park Dr. For those of you who were approached by one of our enthusiastic volunteers and decided to visit our website, thanks for visiting! We hope you’ll attend our upcoming conference from June 25 to June 27, 2010.

Whether you apply as a student or a mentor, you have a number of ways to receive notification about the release of the applications.

Students must be attending high school in Fall 2010 to apply. We release the student application sometime around late March.

Mentors must have completed at least 2 years of college to apply. Recent college graduates are also encouraged to apply. Expect to see the mentor application in April.

Before we sign off, we have a new year’s gift for everyone! We created a YLC slideshow that recaps Conference 2009 and gives those of you who are new to YLC a small glance of what YLC is like. The slideshow debuted at our Banquet 2 weeks ago.

Our first music video

For 2 minutes and 46 seconds, you can relieve the memories of YLC 2009. Someone took all of the footage that was shot at YLC (probably 30 GB worth), sifted through all of it, cut out the exciting bits, and set it to music. And who was this special little someone that did all of this for us? Nick Fung – our mentor extraordinaire and Cafe Y 2009 MC. Enjoy!

Thank You Mentors

Dear Leader Makers, It must have been around 6:05 AM Sunday morning when I found myself completely alone, and scrambling to write my warm fuzzies to [almost] all of the mentors (sorry Nina). I looked around the general assembly area and realized that the tables still needed to be cleared of our late night Jack-In-The Box and some chairs still needed to be rearranged before the students begin to pile in for breakfast. I glanced at the clock again and realized that I would probably only get about an hour of sleep before breakfast. It was then that I stopped and thought to myself...What the heck? I’m VOLUNTEERING to do all of this work!?!? It wasn’t until almost all of the students had left on Sunday afternoon that I finally got a second to sit down and think to myself… wow, in some small minuscule way… we had all just made this world a little better. Just knowing that we had done some good, and getting the chance to see Gordon perform live… made all of the work and suffering worth it. I just want to let all of the mentors know that we realize that you guys gave up a lot this weekend to volunteer for YLC. You guys sacrificed your sleep, your energy, your valuable time, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, you guys gave up Asian food for a full 2 days to make the YLC Conference happen. For all that y’all have done, I thank you on behalf of the board and executive board members of YLC. This absolutely could not have happened without your efforts. And if a big “thank you” in blog form doesn’t cut it for you, we will be having our Mentor Appreciation in the near future!! Regards, David Tang

A Poem Dedicated to YLC!

Here's a poem that one of our board members wrote: Every year in June YLC comes around. It instantly becomes the talk of the town. This year’s conference is themed A Call to Action. Everyone will be separated into factions. Each team will have their own nonprofit issue. It is your goal to stand out and push through. Get to know your team through some fun and cool games, A good way to make sure everyone knows your name. Be creative making your warm fuzzy bag. Stand out from the crowd designing your team flag. Line Up! will have you at a loss for words. There is no doubt that you will look absurd. Physical activities are the best part of the day. Everyone gets a chance to run around and play. Café Y showcases the talented few. Feel free to go up to sing a song or two. Sunday comes around and we must say bye. Everyone is still on a YLC high! Apply these skills to start your own NPO. Work hard at it and watch your group grow. Be prepared this year for a wonderful time. Hope to see all of y’all at YLC 2009! By Tommy Ma
